  • Knife: This is one of my toughest, most durable knives I make for combat, rescue, emergency response, hazardous disaster response and survival, and fit with an extremely high toughness stainless powder metal technology tool and die steel, CPM154CM. If you are looking for a tremendously durable and useful survival, combat, emergency response, and crisis-curing knife and accessory package, here it is, with a blade steel that has impeccable performance characteristics. My Arctica design is named for rigid and unyielding ice breaker-styled geometries of ships that clear the arctic shipping lanes and named for an ancient continent formed early in the earth's age in what is now the Canadian and Siberian shields. This combination of high alloy, steel thickness, carefully executed curves, and a strong and substantial handle is what I call "the PJLT on steroids." Since my PJLT is my most popular design of knife, and since it has a proven combat and tactical search and rescue heritage with our nation's top military rescue service (United States Air Force Pararescuemen), it was the inspiration for this next generation of incredibly durable knives. The Arctica is larger, thicker, heavier, and stronger than the PJLT. This particular Arctica blade has my very best heat treatment and cryogenic processing possible, with an extremely long 60 hour deep cryogenic soak at -325°F (-200°C)for a full 95 hour process time. This includes triple tempering with deep cryogenic thermal cycling in between tempers. This creates an extremely tough, tremendously wear resistant, and highly corrosion resistant powder metal stainless tool steel; the best it can possibly be. The blade is razor-keen and it premium condition to remain so for the longest time and heaviest use possible. Profuse carbide precipitation, thorough conversion of martensite, extensive thermal cycling: this blade has it all. I've ground the hollow grind with plenty of thickness, a meaty substantial piece of geometry that will assure high durability, no matter the situation or crisis. The blade has a strong spine, with excellent matching hollow grinds leading to a razor-keen single bevel cutting edge. The blade has two and a half inches of my hammerhead serrations for ripping through tough materials, combining hollow ground and chisel ground geometries for a aggressive cutting action with little hanging or snagging. It has a total of over four inches of standard hollow ground tanto blade in front, razor-sharp. The spine has a half-length top swage for reduced cross sectional thickness without sacrificing strength, and the blade is fully hand-fileworked with a geometric regimented alternating pattern completely around the full tang which is tapered for balance. This aids in grip friction and adds distinctive handmade flair. The Ghost Slate treatment of my finest counterterrorism knives compliments this Shadow treatment This is an extreme use, high toughness, high wear resistance powder metal technology stainless steel blade. The knife is bolstered with zero-care high nickel, high chromium 304 austenitic stainless steel. The rear bolster has a large 3/8" (10 mm) diameter chamfered lanyard hole for extra security when needed. Six through-tang 304 stainless steel pins secure the dovetailed and bedded Coyote and Black G10 fiberglass/epoxy composite handle material, and the entire knife has my "Ghost Slate" non-reflective darkening finish for subdued appearance and low reflectivity. This is not a coating, paint, or plating; this is the very surface of the stainless tool steel. Make no mistake, this is a highly corrosion resistant stainless steel assembly suited for wet exposures, yet is blackened and stealthy, suitable for combat, survival, emergency response, law enforcement, and even counterterrorism operations. Read more about my "Shadow" line of knives. The handle has a great form, with extremely large quillons and a deep belly that positively locks into the hand. The knife feels incredibly robust, well-balanced and stout in the hand, and the balance point is exactly at the forefinger placement in forward grip. The knife grips well in reverse, as well, with the thumb easily wrapped over the wide and large handle butt to apply force.
  • Sheath: I've included my best locking tactical sheath, the very best locking sheath made in the world today. It's made of double-thickness coyote kydex, bonded and sealed over a frame of coyote anodized 5052 H32 corrosion-resistant, high strength aluminum alloy. The near-ceramic hard coating on the aluminum is permanently dyed coyote brown and specially sealed against fading even in long-term ultraviolet sunlight exposure. The sheath is built with all 304 stainless steel hardware and fasteners, and with an extremely corrosion-resistant 316 stainless steel locking mechanism for reliability, no matter what the sheath is exposed to. The sheath is sealed with waterproof bonding and the inside is permanently coated and prevents the blade steel from contacting any metal of the welt frame. The lockup is quick and secure, solid and strong, so the knife can be worn in any position, even upside down. This is absolutely, positively, the very best locking sheath made in the world. The sheath frame features my integrated spacing so that my accessories and mounts can be used (below). The sheath is entirely reversible for a huge variety of wearing options with the equipment included.
  • Ultimate Belt Loop Extender (UBLX): I included my Ultimate survival, CSAR tactical, rescue, and counterterrorism sheath belt loop extension with outstanding and critical features and devices. The nylon and polyester accessory is waterproof, durable, and extremely stout, and lowers the locking knife sheath to be worn in a more traditional belt position with the knife handle at the hip. The extension is mounted with counter-bored and dressed 304 stainless steel straps and stainless steel socket head cap screws attached to the existing stainless Chicago screws, and the assembly is stiffened by multiple zigzag polyester stitching to prevent the extension from folding, bending, or collapsing when the knife is extracted from the sheath. The belt loop is 2 inches wide for standard tactical belts, and has a top placement elastic bungee shock cord with snap retention to prevent the knife handle from flopping around during active movements. Even the dot-snap assembly is all stainless steel and is media-blasted and oxidized coyote brown for non-glare and camouflage matching. The shock cord is not for retention of the knife; this is done with the stainless steel sheath lock; it just stops the handle from flopping around during very active moments (running, climbing, crawling). At the lower back of the extension I've included a custom fit pocket for a DMT (Diamond Machining Technology) Mini-Sharp diamond-nickel abrasive hone, to bring up the cutting edge in the field with ease, even on this high alloy powder metal, wear resistant blade. These are great tools that can re-sharpen or just touch up even the hardest tool steel edges, as they are surface-bonded with diamond abrasives. The pocket for this tool is situated at the sheath back and against the body, so the sharpener can not be removed unless the sheath is off the body and the industrial strength Velcro closure is open.   • Sternum Harness Plus: The sternum harness I've included is the result of input from my military and counterterrorism clients. It allows the knife to be worn, handle down, angled across the sternum, on top of any other tactical gear. This harness is made of coyote brown nylon and stitched with polyester for rot-free, high strength longevity, and the buckles and straps are tough Acetyl plastic with 110 lbs. breaking strength. The harness can be donned and doffed quickly and simply, and the "plus" is the additional one-inch wide stabilizing strap and buckle that creates an "X" strap around the torso, to prevent movement in any position of the wearer. Even the removable X-strap assembly has a snap that is non-glare, and made of stainless steel for zero-care and high corrosion resistance.
  • LIMA Emergency Lamp (Lamp Independent Mount Assembly): An important lesson I learned from my military and counterterrorism clients is the addition of the emergency lamp. The LIMA is a special socket in thick and wide double-thickness coyote brown nylon stitched with polyester for durability and rot resistance, and it accommodates a LED Maglite Solitaire. This little light puts out, at 37 lumens for over an hour and a half, it can reach out 180 feet and give you enough light to get to safety, and the entire assembly is extremely lightweight and water resistant. The LIMA is secured with a 304 stainless steel strap and screws and mounts anywhere along the sheath welts where I have the critical 2.5" spacing. The retaining strap rings are also 304 stainless, and the 3/16" shock cord is easily replaceable if needed, and replacement shock cord is included.
  • Horizontal Belt Loop Plates: Answering the call of my counterterrorism and military clients, I've included a pair of horizontal belt loop plates for this knife sheath. These bolt onto either side of the sheath using included hardware, and are 5052H32 high strength corrosion resistant aluminum alloy, completely anodized and permanently dyed coyote brown with a near-ceramic hard surface. They are welded for durability, and light weight. They allow horizontal wear of any belt up to 1.5" wide, and the sheath runs inline with the belt.
  • Flat strap plates (horizontal and/or vertical): These have several uses: one is to mount the knife sheath rigidly clamped to the sternum harness, with no play. They also allow the sheath to be clamped on any gear (like PALS webbing) with a solid strap security and no sliding around (like on traditional belt loops). So they clamp the sheath to your gear with all stainless steel hardware. They accommodate any web strap up to over 2" wide. They are also 5052 H32 high strength, corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy, anodized with a permanent coyote brown olor, and a near-ceramic hard surface.
  • High and Low-profile belt loops (footman's loops): I've included two pairs of anodized aluminum belt loops, one pair that accommodates 1.5" wide belts up to .250" thick and one pair that accommodates 1.5" wide belts up to .190" thick. They work with the integrated spacing so can be mounted in a variety of positions on the reversible sheath. All coyote brown, non-reflective camouflage.
  • Lanyard, hardware, tools: The included lanyard can be critical and necessary for retention of your knife when working in elevated locations or in marine environments. It's an adjustable sliding paracord type, a frequent request by my tactical combat professionals. I've included all the tools, hardware, and necessary components to mount all or any combination of these accessories with your gear, on your person, and all of the hardware is coyote brown, non-reflective stainless steel in common American Standard Sizes. Included is screw top and snap tins for hardware storage. Also included is an archival engraved acrylic tag detailing the components with contact information. Instructions for the individual components are also included, as well as a list of video links that explain how to set up every single one of them! This is an ultimate system, and demonstrates my commitment to actual combat, tactical, field, rescue, and counterterrorism knife service in my trade.
  • Heavy 9" x 12" Duffle: It's important to keep everything together, safe, and accessible, and I couldn't find any duffle heavy and stout enough for the job, so I make these too! I make them in 1000 Denier Coyote Brown Cordura® ballistic nylon, coated on the inside with polyurethane for water resistance. This is some of the heaviest, toughest material available, and I've double-row stitched all of the seams with strong, waterproof, sunlight-resistant heavy polyester thread. I've attached strong coyote brown metal #8 zippers and double pulls, and reinforced the zipper ends and 2" wide nylon carry straps. I've even included a 7mm thick closed-cell foam inner base pad, wrapped in 600 Denier Cordura nylon in the bottom to prevent abrasion and wear. You can store paperwork and other items in the base bag. The duffle is identified with my "Quality Without Compromise" patch.

Jay you need a section on your website that displays only "beasts" of this style. There is no way that you can accurately describe weapons of this style and be believed. Over the decades I have seen a lot of survival knives, military issue knives and knives made by self-proclaimed experts that are one time used and thrown away for all practical purposes. I was tracking the package eagerly and was happy to find it arrived a day early. The knife is simply beautiful. Without being prone to hyperbole- it is the best knife I have ever held by far. I am so, so impressed. The balance is absolutely perfect. This is a beast of a knife, but it fits my hand like it was made for it- feels like an extension of my arm. The geometry of the blade is so perfectly symmetrical and the the cutting edge is surgical.
I remember reading your website where it says that you "make the real thing." I believed that statement when I read it, but now I feel what you mean. This is no factory production knife. I know our men in combat who carry your knives have confidence that the knife will stand up to any challenge. The kydex sheath is awesome and it locks the blade without even a slight jiggle. The accessories are such a nice touch and I greatly appreciated that you put that much thought into the components that would compliment the knife/sheath.

Thanks for checking in; I received the Arctica today.
Wow! There is no way I can describe how impressed I am with this knife. The pictures on your website are great, but they just don't compare to experiencing the reality. It's going to take me days to get used to every detail, especially with so many great accessories included, so here are my very first impressions:
The balance is perfect; that big rear bolster really balances out the hefty blade so that it pivots perfectly on the first two fingers of my grip; combined with the thumb rise, this thing handles like a much lighter knife.
At first I thought the space between the bolsters was a little large for my hand, then I realized, a knife like this was designed for guys who wear gloves! Sure enough, with a pair of shooting gloves the grip is perfect.
The flat finish is ideal for a no-nonsense work knife, and the squared-off file work adds detail without being "showy" (which I don't think would suit it). I love how all the metal parts on the sheath and it's accessories match the finish on the knife.
There are so many other impressive details, but you're a busy guy, and anyway the point is I couldn't be happier, thank you so much for making this knife and giving me the opportunity to own it.

Hello Jay,

I sat down to open the package containing Arctica with a bit of trepidation, expecting a complex system that would require some work to appreciate. After first admiring your impeccable and beautiful work on the obviously made-for-business-use leather sheath, I laid out the rest of the box's contents. As I did, the first thought I had regarding the Arctica knife and tactical sheath was, "This is the real deal."

What a great looking handle, with the brass fibers providing a visual texture that made me want to pick up the knife. Taking the knife, in the sheath, in hand and appreciating the solidity of it as a unit is a striking tactile indicator of how tight the design and implementation is. This is a precision piece of engineering. I'm relieved that the handle isn't too large for my hand. Now to the really fun part, hitting that locking-mechanism release with the tip of my thumb and drawing the blade from the sheath. And then doing it again and again, just to enjoy it; it locks securely with no play of knife in sheath, but releases so easily with the natural draw grip. I wondered if you had an "Aha!" moment when you thought of the design.

This is a robust knife, with the feel that only the best tools have. To me that feeling is, "I trust this tool to get the job done. I can rely on it to perform whenever I need it, under hard use and bad conditions."

Setting the knife aside for a bit I go back to the sheath and its functionality. I find the HULA ingenious and it makes so much sense to have this attached to the sheath rather than a separate attachment point elsewhere. Moreover, the ball joint lets me put light wherever I want it, with the paddle-tensioner easily adjusted with a gloved hand. At this point I am certain this is going on the sternum harness.

Jay the integration of the fire starter and diamond sharpener are well done and together with the spare parts and accessories, to say nothing of the sternum harness, complete this "ultimate package." All of your detailed instructions are a valuable resource, but my initial trepidation about the system was unwarranted. What you've built is precise, robust and intuitive. You did the thinking so I can do the 'doing.' I think my words of appreciation for Aquila were more concise, but I've had such a good time this afternoon getting to know this Arctica that I wanted to share my delight.

Again, much respect for your knowledge, skill, precision and attitude. To be the pinnacle of human endeavor in a chosen field is indeed righteous.
