  • Lock plate: 6AL4V titanium, anodized
  • Knife: The Izar is named for a double star in the constellation Bootes. This is a custom Izar, made for a great client. The blade is 440C high chromium martensitic hypereutectoid stainless steel, and I've treated this blade for the best possible condition with deep cryogenic processing, extended time soak for maximum precipitation of eta-carbides, followed by triple tempering with deep cryogenic soaks in between for the highest toughness and highest wear resistance and highest corrosion resistance possible in this steel. Every bit of hardware, the pivots, the machine screws, the hidden and exposed parts are all stainless steel or titanium, offering the highest corrosion resistance possible. The blade is mirror polished, with a good, serviceable hollow grind, a very keen edge, backed up with plenty of spine for support. The spacer-spine is also hardened, tempered, and cryogenically treated, and is fully fileworked for handmade distinction, even on the inside which is also polished and finished. The knife has a beautiful inlaid handle. I made the outer liners of high chromium, high nickel 304 austenitic stainless steel, and hand-engraved a nice, fine leaf and scroll pattern over the pivot area. The liners are fully fileworked against the spine, and the spring-lock plate is made of 6AL4V titanium that I fully fileworked and anodized a green-gold color. The anodization also forms a hard, durable and uniform passive coating that is permanent and tough. The handle liners are inlaid with beautiful Indian Green Moss Agate gemstone scales. The gemstone is very hard and tough, accurately carved for the inlay, and polished to a glassy luster. The patterns in the stone are fascinating, with whites, milky and clear, and green mossy forms, with a few crystalline areas. This is a cryptocrystalline quartz, thin and strong, slightly domed above the surface and bedded into a carved pocket in the stainless steel. If you look close in the gemstone, you can see the stainless screws beneath. The knife is smooth, solid, comfortable, and elegant in the hand, the lockup is strong, tight, and secure; the detent pulling and holding it closed is easy and even.
